Accurate to within one centigram (10 milligrams) this pocket sized electronic scale is ideal for fieldwork. It comes in a convenient cigarette-lighter shaped outer-container, with about twice the dimensions of standard ‘Zippo’ type oil lighters. Most of the body of the outer-container is plastic, perfectly dimensioned for the scale to fit into, with no ‘rattle’ when shaken. The scale has its own tight fitting plastic cover, and operates using a single lithium CR2032 battery. It can handle up to 50 grams with a sensitivity of 0.01g (1 centigram).
The scale can operate in four different standards:
? The gram (g) of the International System of units
? Imperial avoirdupois ounces (oz.) currently used in commerce in the USA.
? Troy Ounces (ozt.) traditionally used for gold, precious metals and gems
? The Pennyweight (dwt.) a traditional unit
The Pennyweight is uncommon but is traditionally used for measuring Silver, It is also frequently found in old Chemical Formulae books such as ‘Dick’s Chemical Recipes’, a book popular amongst craftspeople looking for ‘secret’ traditional formulae to aid them in their work.
It also has a full set of tare functions that allows you to discount the weight of a container when working.
With more than a month of active use, I have found the device to be accurate in its measurement and reliable in use. An accuracy of ten milligrams is as low as you can go without needing an enclosure to protect against drafts, which moves you into specialised balances of the type found in chemical laboratories. I initially used a set of laboratory weights to check the accuracy of the scale, finding it hard to believe that it could really be as accurate as claimed, but the device lived up to its manufacturers claims straight out of the box, and indeed has maintained it accuracy despite its sensitivity.
Pros:
Accurate
Compact
Reliable
Well designed and built
Cons:
None. Just be realistic about what you want to weigh with this degree of accuracy, and the 50g maximum weight (just under 2 ounces). This is too small and too accurate for us as a kitchen or postal scale.
Neither the case nor the scale are waterpoof. So when working in the field keep the whole thing in a ziplock type bag.

This scale works very well and is easy to carry due to the protective case.
Pros:
hard case
good battery life and common battery type
built in weighing tray (internal lid doubles as one)
accurate to a 100th of a gram
Cons:
Is a bit bigger than a real lighter so if you plan to use it for dubious purposes don't expect it to be ignored as a normal lighter. (Not a problem for me as I use it for legitimate reasons)
